Cyclone Hamish - A Windsurfing Adventure Video

On March 11th 2009, a Category 5 cyclone (TC Hamish) was forecasted to hit the east coast of Australia around Hervey Bay at 1am. A group of us windsurfers, including Sean O’Brien and Julien Ventalon (shown in the video) drove north from Brisbane to Harvey Bay on that Monday morning to windsurf in the strong winds and tidal surge before the cyclone hit.
They were advised to make sure they were out of town by 4pm that day otherwise the roads might have flooded with the tidal surge and could leave them trapped to wait out the cyclone…

Sean wins eight of the 11 races at the 2009 Oceanic & Australian Formula Windsurfing Championships hosted in Sydney to win the coveted Australian FW Championship Title for his third time. The event took place over four days at Ramsgate Beach, Botany Bay, Sydney with 11 races taking place in conditions ranging from light winds up to ballistic 25-30 knots. FollowTheWinds.com [Education by Entertainment for Kids and Youth] is a new media initiative of Sean O’Brien and Kate Morton following and expressing the lifestyles of 6 of the top pro Formula Windsurfing riders from Europe and abroad. The project aims to educate and inspire the youth about following your dreams (winds) and leading a positive life through inspiration seen in the lifestyles led by our six riders. The next step of the project is to take the concept to the European (and eventually international) media.

Sean wins the Greek FW Championships

For some final preparations for the Formula World Championships in Portugal next week, Sean flew to Athens, Greece to compete in the Greek FW Championships. The event took place in Schinias Marathonas on the eastern side of Athens and the top Formula and RS:X sailors from Greece took part in the four-day regatta with wind conditions anything from light winds up to 35 knots! On The Podium At The Nordic Championships

Sean finishes 2nd overall behind Jesper Vesterstrøm (DEN-111) and ahead of Nikolaj Kruppa (DEN-4) in the 2008 Nordic Championships. The event took place over three days in Nyborg, Denmark with 6 races taking place in 8-14 knot winds.
